The early 1960s were a fascinating period in the Pacific Northwest and arguably the peak of Mid Century Modernism in the region. Seattle was still a small, globally obscure port city in the far NW corner of the United States that sought to put itself on the map as an ambitious, tech-oriented city with an eye on the future. This eventually led to the development of the Century 21 Exposition (AKA the Seattle Worlds Fair) in 1962 and the building of the Space Needle which instantly became the iconic symbol of the region. Art, Architecture, and ideas blossomed during this time as the theme of the Exposition was “Space, Science and the Future” and indeed anything seemed possible.

It was during this time that MidMod Vashon was built and the clean lines, large windows, lack of ornamentation, and emphasis on indoor and outdoor spaces that complement each other are obvious qualities of this period. We hope that we have continued this tradition by bringing you art and furnishings from the early 1960s that reflect the energy and enthusiasm of the time.
